The centerpiece of the concert is Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 ‘Titan.’ “Mahler’s symphony is extraordinary not only in its breadth but also in its emotional content. Mahler believed that his personal passions, struggles, and ecstasies could and should be fodder for his musical expression. It all comes to life in this fantastic First Symphony. Mahler was a great writer of song, and he chose some of his finest melodies in his songs to incorporate as searing moments for the brass, woodwinds, strings, and the percussion,” said Daniel Meyer, Artistic Director.

The evening opens with Micah Wilkinson, trumpet, performing Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto, composed in 1950. “This is a wonderful and thrilling concerto that not only shows off the beautiful lyrical style of the trumpet but is also filled with virtuosic passagework,” said Meyer. “It’s a perfect showcase for the artistry that Micah Wilkinson brings to the stage each time he plays.”

Micah Wilkinson was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra by Music Director Manfred Honeck in September 2017. Wilkinson came to the Pittsburgh Symphony from the San Diego Symphony, where he served as Principal Trumpet for three years. He previously held positions with the Houston Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the Oregon Symphony, and the Tucson Symphony. He is a graduate St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and he pursued additional studies at Arizona State University and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany.

Ticket prices for the concert range from $20 – $69 and may be purchased at the door or can be reserved by calling the WSO Office at 724-837-1850 or westmorelandsymphony.org. Student Rush tickets are $10 the night of the show.
