In addition to the local vocalists, Daniel Meyer selected professional soloists including Grammy-nominated baritone Joshua Jeremiah;Terrence Chin-Loy, tenor,a first-year Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist; and Amanda Olea, soprano, a Central City Opera (Denver) Apprentice Artist.
“I chose Orff’s Carmina Burana to cap the WSO’s fiftieth anniversary season largely for its capacity to express the sheer joy of living. This colossal work serves as a celebration of earthly life, and in some ways, the imagery of a wheel of fate that continues to turn points us towards this happy fact: as long as we support great music, there will be people who will dedicate their lives to bringing these epic scores to life on the stage.
While the pain, rejection, sorrows, and disappointments of life are certainly revealed this music, those moments of sadness are fleeting and often couched in moments of irony and good humor. The uninhibited joys of dance, drink, love, and song are in full display, and to have the chance to assemble such a large cast that includes choir, children, operatic voices, and a large orchestra honors everyone who has and will continue to make the WSO thrive into its next 50 years.”
